eBooks

for Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo and other eReaders

1. Overview

 

The library offers downloadable eBooks.  To view our entire collection you must log in with your library card number. Visit www.swanlibrary.org and click on the
Overdrive icon to view our catalog.


Our eBooks are compatible with both Windows PCs and Macs, as well as eReaders that support Adobe DRM protected EPUB and PDF eBook formats.  A complete list of compatible devices can be found on the Overdrive website in the left-hand column.
To transfer an eBook to your eReader you must download it to your computer and use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer it to your eReader or view the eBook on your computer.
You must install and register Adobe
Digital Editions on your computer before you can use library eBooks.

 2. Getting Adobe Digital  Editions

Downloading Adobe Digital Editions
 Adobe Digital Editions is a free application that is used to organize eBook collections, read eBooks on a computer, and transfer eBooks to compatible eReaders.
Adobe Digital Editions can be downloaded at the Overdrive website under the “Software Downloads” section in the left-hand column.
Registering Adobe Digital Editions Once you have installed Adobe digital Editions and open it for the first time, you will be prompted to enter your Adobe ID and
password. You can create and Adobe ID for free by
clicking on the “get an Adobe ID online” link. 
If you were required to register your eReader using an email address, you must also register for an Adobe ID using that same email address.

 3. Using the Overdrive Catalog

Browsing and Searching the Overdrive Catalog
Featured eBooks can be browsed on the     Overdrive homepage.  Make sure to login to the website to view our entire collection of downloadable eBooks.
You can also keyword search the catalog using the search bar at the top of the page or using the advanced search features by clicking the “Advanced search...” link which is also located at the top of the page.
 Checking out an eBook               
 To check out a title, tap the “Add to Selections” link next to the “Adobe EPUB eBook”
or “Adobe PDF eBook” icons.  If an eBook is
unavailable, the “Add to Selections” button will instead read “Place a Hold.” 
Once you proceed to checkout, you will be prompted to select how long you wish to
 borrow the title.  After you click the “Confirm Checkout” button, the web page will display a “Download” button next to a thumbnail image of the book’s cover. 
Depending on how your computer is configured, the eBook will either open
automatically in Adobe Digital Editions, or a pop-up will appear and ask if you want to
 “Save” or “Open” the file.  You will want  to choose “Open.”

 4.  Using Adobe Digital Editions

 

Library View To open a book to read on your computer, select the eBook and then double click on it.
Reading View Once a book is opened, Adobe Digital Editions will switch to “Reading View
From the top menu bar, you can increase or decrease text size, view bookmarks you have     created, and in some eBooks, print selections of the text.  You can toggle between “Library View” and “reading View” by clicking the two buttons in the upper left-hand corner of the
window.
You can advance to specific chapters by clicking the links listed in the left-hand sidebar.  To scroll backward and forward through the text, click the arrows in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
Transferring an eBook to your eReader         To transfer an eBook to your eReader, first, plug the device into your computer using the cable the  manufacturer provided you with.
Once the device is connected to the computer, it will appear in the left-hand sidebar of the “Library View” window.  Drag the eBook you want to transfer to your eReader to the device icon in the left-hand sidebar.
On some eReaders, library eBooks will
appear under “My Documents” and not
 under “My Library” with eBooks you have purchased.
