Using the Library
Our Policy

Welcome to Swan Library which is your public library. Its rules and procedures are designed to make it possible for each one of us to share its books and media fairly. We hope, with your help, to make your library experience a pleasant one.

1. All books and other media (video and audio cassettes, DVDs, CDs, etc.) must be checked out at the circulation desk. Present your Library card for barcode scanning. No materials may be removed without being checked out with your card.

2. Books may be borrowed for 21 days and renewed by phone, the Internet, or by bringing them to the desk for renewal. Best sellers may be borrowed for 14 days with no renewal. A fine is charged for each overdue item of $.10 per day for adult books, $.05 per day for children's books, and $1.00 per day for DVDs and videos.

Two notices are sent if necessary, and if there is no return, a bill is sent next. If fines exceed $3.00, borrowing privileges are
suspended until the account is settled.

Patrons will be charged $1.00 for replacement of lost library cards.

You may want to inquire about extended institutional or group loans, or about
Interlibrary Loan Services (NIOGA) >

3. Lost, or severely damaged books must be paid for. You will be charged for replacement cost.

4. Books in the Reference alcove, the Local History/Genealogy and certain special collections such as those in the Curtis Room, may be used in the library under supervision of a library staff person. Ask the Librarian or desk staff to help you find the information you need.

5. The library is a quiet place where one may come to study or read, unbothered by noise and confusion. Please keep your voice low and your activities limited to those which will not disturb others as they try to work or study.

6. No materials published before 1900 may be photocopied.

7. Restrooms may be used by the public. Please leave them in the condition you would like to find them.

8. SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED ON LIBRARY PROPERTY!

9. The meeting room is available on a first come, first served basis.

10. Interloan materials from the NIOGA System Library will be held for 7 days only. Then the Central Library (NIOGA) computer cancels the hold.

Meeting Room Use
Policy: The meeting room is available to the public, first come first served, during library hours.  The meeting room may be used by organizations engaged in educational, cultural, intellectual, or charitable activities. The schedule for use is kept on the Main Desk calendar.  The name of the organization requesting use, time of meeting, contact person’s name and telephone number are required and written in pencil on the day scheduled. The organization may set up the folding chairs, and request use of the coffee maker for hot water. Since the library closes at 8:00 PM, meetings may not extend beyond that time unless a staff member, or library trustee is in the building to assume responsibility for turning out lights and locking all doors.
