1. Overview

 

The library offers downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks.  To view our entire collection you must log in with your library card. Visit www.swanlibrary.org and click on the Overdrive icon to view our catalog.

 

Overdrive Media Console is a free mobile app that enables you to read EPUB eBooks and listen to MP3 Audiobooks on devices running Apple iOS 4.0 or newer, Android 1.5 or newer, Windows Phone 7, and BlackBerry OS 4.7 or newer. The app can be downloaded for free from your devices app store or from the “Software Downloads” section of the nioga.lib.overdrive.com website. Note: Although the screenshots in this
pamphlet depict the iPad version of the app, it looks and functions primarily the same on other compatible devices.

 

2. Registering the Overdrive App

Before you can begin downloading eBooks, you must register the app with an Adobe ID.
You can create an Adobe ID for free by tapping the “Register at Adobe.com” button that
appears the first time you launch the app. 
Once you have your Adobe ID, you can register your Apple iOS device by tapping the “Get Books +” then selecting “Settings,” and then tapping the “Authorize” button. 
To register your Android, Windows  Phone 7, or BlackBerry, press your device’s menu key, then select “Settings”, and then enter your Adobe ID.

Your device will need to be connected to the internet to complete the registration process.

 3. Using the Overdrive Catalog

 

Browsing and Searching the Overdrive Catalog  
Featured eBooks and eAudiobooks can be browsed on the Overdrive homepage.  Make sure to login to the website to view our entire collection of downloadable books.
To search the catalog, tap the “Search” button at the top of the screen.  To limit search results to eBooks that are currently available for checkout, check off the box that reads “Show only available titles.”  You can also perform an advanced search by tapping the “Advanced” link.
To access the catalog from an Android , Windows Phone 7, or BlackBerry device you need to click the “Menu” button.  Next, click on the “Get Books” button and select your library.
Checking out an eBook
To check out a title, tap the “Add to Selections” button.  If a title is unavailable, the “Add to
Selections” button will instead read “Place a Hold.”  If you are downloading eBooks, be sure to
select the Adobe EPUB eBook format.

Once you proceed to checkout, you will be prompted to select how long you wish to borrow the title; you can choose from a 7 or 14 day checkout.  After you click the “Confirm
Checkout” button, the web page will display a “Download” button next to a thumbnail image of the book’s cover.  Tap “Download,” and the title will automatically open in the Overdrive Media Console mobile app.

4.  Reading an eBook

 

To begin reading an eBook tap the thumbnail image of the cover of the book. eAudiobooks will begin playing automatically once you open them. To flip through the pages of an eBook, tap the right side of the screen to advance forward and the left side of the screen to move backward.
On Apple devices, you can activate the eBook controls by tapping on the center of the screen when viewing an eBook.  Using the eBook controls, you can advance to different chapters of the book, change the font size, save bookmarks, and return to the “Bookshelf” view by tapping
buttons at the top of the screen.
On Android, Windows Phone 7, and BlackBerry devices, you must first press the “Menu Key” to access the eBook controls.
On Apple devices, eBooks can be deleted by
tapping the “Edit” button at the top left-hand side of the library screen, then tapping the red circle, and then tapping the “Delete Only” button.  When you are finished, be sure to tap the “Done” button in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
On Android devices, an eBook can be deleted by opening it, then by pressing the “Menu Key,” and then tapping or the “Delete Only” button.
