The Swan Library is foremost a library, dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of information through the printed or spoken word. It is also, to a much lesser extent, a repository of local history artifacts.
The library is pleased to accept gifts and special collections that will further its mission. All gifts to the Swan Library are accepted with the condition that they become the sole property of the Swan Library and may be utilized as the library deems advisable.
The library tries to follow the wishes of the donor in the use of monetary gifts although it is preferable that money be given without limitations. The library will accept money for specific projects, such as buying certain types of books or making certain capital improvements. The library will also accept money with the provision that the capital be preserved and only interest expended. The use of the interest may be restricted within certain limits such as keeping up a book collection.
Special book, video, DVD, CD, tape, photographic, manuscript collections or computer software will be accepted by the library if they fit into the scope and needs of the library. The library will make an effort to support all collections it accepts. The Library also accepts books, periodicals, videos, records, tapes, photographs, manuscripts, and computer software not part of special collections. The Swan Library is a repository for local history information of interest within Orleans County in the form of books, magazines, photographs, tapes, videos, manuscripts, ephemera and computer software.
Although the Swan Library is not a museum, it does preserve some local history artifacts of local and county interest. The library would much prefer that local history artifacts be placed in a museum within the county. However, in special circumstances the library will accept artifacts of special interest to Albion or Orleans County.
